Let's talk a little bit about eraser art, or using a variety of erasers and erasing techniques to produce a work of art.
Erasers come in all colors, shapes, sizes, stickinesses (is that a word?), and pliabilities (plural noun form of pliable[?]). They can be used with charcoal or graphite to produce some beautiful effects.
If you're just starting out, have fun with this. Put down a layer of graphite (2B - 6B is dark) onto your paper. Try different kinds of paper, too, as you can achieve different results depending on the surface (the "tooth" or the smoothness or lack of it) of the paper.
Then just use your eraser to remove the graphite. A kneaded eraser is probably the best tool for this because you can make it into a flat surface to gradually remove larger areas, or you can make it into a sharp point to erase details. If you need to get very detailed, try a Mono eraser by Tombow.
More on this tomorrow.
