Using someone's personality as inspiration

This is a journal cover I created a few years ago. A friend commissioned it for her brother's birthday. He loves art deco, and the Marine Building in Vancouver, BC, in particular. He's also a fan of Yoda and a comic book character (sorry, can't recall her name at the moment). They are not art deco.

I made several layers of the ornate windows above by photocopying onto material with an iron-on backing. After carefully cutting out the windows in each layer, I sewed onto individual layers with silver and gold threads. Finally I sewed the building front to the book cover and added Yodo and his friend.

It was quite time-consuming, but I was pleased with the end result.
